The natural history tradition was marginalized with the introduction of Aristotelianism in the 13th century, but it continued to play a role in conceiving of nature as a text to be read in a. This book examines the first stage of this development, from the 13th-century introduction of Aristotelianism and its establishment of natural philosophy as the point of entry into systematic understanding of the world and our place in it, to the attempts to establish natural philosophy as a world-view in the wake of the Scientific Revolution.

Natural theology, once also termed physico-theology, is a type of theology that provides arguments for the existence of God based on reason and ordinary experience of nature. This distinguishes it from revealed theology, which is based on scripture and/or religious experiences, also from transcendental theology, which is based on a priori.

"Physico-theology contributes significantly to ongoing debates about religion and the emergence of the new science of the seventeenth century, the character of the Enlightenment, and, more broadly, the historical relations between religion and science or, to put it.

For the last half century, Mikuláš Teich has made many eminent contributions to the histories of science, technology, medicine and society. His essentially Marxist historiographical stance has resisted the notion that science is an autonomous entity, and has instead stressed the interplay of the economic, the social and the scientific forces in history.

The poets of the early 18th century either want to purify the reader morally or else they wish to portray nature as terrifying and therefore as sublime, enabling the reader to grasp it within the framework of so-called ‘ physico-theology ’ as the work of Almighty God.

Physicotheology definition is - theology illustrated or enforced by evidences of purpose in nature. Using the telescope, this man observed the moons of Jupiter inproving that all "heavenly bodies" do not orbit the earth. When he found that the surfaces of the moon and sun were inconsistent, with "spots" on the sun and craters and valleys on the moon, he supported the idea that the entire universe was composed of "ordinary matter" the way the earth is.

The heterodox inclinations of leading Newtonian divines, such as Samuel Clarke, William Whiston, and Thomas Rundle, compromised whiggish attempts to enlist the new science in the service of Hanoverian panegyric.

Dec 01,  · I recently came across an interesting quote by Anglican rector William Derham in his book entitled Physico-Theology: “Let us examine (the minute details of nature) with all our gauges, measure them with our nicest rules, pry into them with our microscopes and most exquisite instruments ” Derham believed that hidden in the minuscule details of nature .
